EVENT MANAGEMENT

Event management is not a whole new concept. It is a common sight for anyone that attends an occasion or another to encounter an event planner while trying to execute his/her duties. The industry has grown enormously over the years contributing conservatively over N100billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Nigeria annually and potentially has about N1trillion in turnover. Event management companies are usually engaged to plan and execute big events such as weddings, concerts, conferences, etc.

While weddings and concerts are common events for an event manager, events like; Class reunions, sports events, and large parties are also occasions that can benefit from event management. Government entities, non-profits, associations, and corporations all utilize event management companies to coordinate important events and meetings. The event management function can often be found within a corporate marketing or public relations department or as part of their special events staffing.

Apart from the aforementioned events, an event manager is immediately contacted to plan any of the following special events;

Event management involves an array of activities for executing large-scale events, which might include but are not limited to conferences, conventions, concerts, trade shows, festivals, and ceremonies. It involves handling the overall logistics of the event, working with staff, and conducting project management of the event as a whole.

From the foregoing, we can quickly say that an event planner is one who oversees all logistics leading up to and during an event, whether a conference, wedding or any organized gathering. Event managers execute the event plans by managing staff, finances, vendor relationships, and more. By doing this the event planner will carry out the following tasks/roles;

The list is in no way exhaustive. Depending on the scope of the event and the other hired professionals, the job responsibilities may vary. Essentially, the event manager is responsible for coordinating all logistics needed for an event

What are the Skills Required For Planning and Managing an Event?

To succeed as an event planner the following skills are necessary;

Interpersonal skills:

Project management is a key element and involves managing not only functions but teams of people hence interpersonal skills are also important. Interaction with individuals at all levels of an organization is part of the job, so being comfortable, personable, and a strong communicator will go a long way in developing those relationships.

Creativity:

How Does An Event Management Company Make Profit?

Event planners are always in demand; from weddings to corporate gatherings, there is always a call for someone who can help make an event run smoothly hence the venture has proven to be a viable business for any upcoming entrepreneur with massive potentials for income generation.

What follows are some ways income is generated by event management companies.

Price Diversification for Different Market Category

Event managers have a different fee structure for social events than corporate events. In the social events industry, planners typically charge a fee for their services, plus a percentage of some or all vendor fees.

In the corporate events industry, however, planners typically charge a fee for their services, plus a handling charge for each item they contract. For example, a planner buys flowers from a florist, marks them up (usually by 15 percent), and charges that amount to the client. Another possibility is a flat fee, or “project fee,” often used when the event is large and the corporation wants to be given a “not to exceed” figure.

Geographic location

Event planners charge more Fees with consideration to geographic locations. For example, fees are higher in big cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt than in cities like Sokoto or Katsina. This difference reflects the variation in the cost of living.
